Diagnostic examination of the biliary tract includes the following:
1.Plain abdominal film.
2.Oral cholecystography
3.Intravenous cholecystography.
4.Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiography.
5.Percutaneous Transhepatic Cholangiography (PTC).
6.Radionuclide Scan (HIDA scan)
7.Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP)
8.Ultrasonography.
9.Computer Tomography (CT) scan.
10.Perioperative Cholangiography:
1.Intraoperative cholangiography.2.Postoperative cholangiography.
1. Plain abdominal Film:
plain abdominal film may show:
–Gall stones in the10-15% of cases where they are radio-opaque.
–Milk of calcium bile.
–Soft tissue mass in the upper abdomen indenting an air-filled hepatic flexure.
–Air in the bile ducts in biliary-enteric fistula or in severe cholangitis, emphysematous cholangitis and biliary ascariasis.
